Man with Sleep Apnea Snoring Next to SpouseNewman Dental Sleep Medicine is a dental practice focused on sleep-disordered breathing.

Sleep-disordered breathing is an umbrella term used for several chronic conditions in which breathing has stopped or severely compromised several times throughout the night. The result is daytime sleepiness or fatigue that interferes with a person’s ability to function. This will eventually lead to an overall reduction in the person’s quality of life.

Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are the most common sleep-disordered breathing conditions treated at Newman Dental Sleep Medicine.

The sleep practice came into fruition when Dr. Marc Newman searched for ways to expand Newman Family Dentistry. In November of 2013 Dr. Marc took a weekend course in Chicago and was first exposed to a health problem that exists world wide—obstructive sleep apnea.

Over 9 million people worldwide have obstructive sleep apnea; over 85% of sleep apnea sufferers are undiagnosed; and about 99% of those people diagnosed are prescribed CPAP for treatment.

ProSomnus Dental Sleep Apnea DeviceLearning that the majority of sleep apnea sufferers aren’t using their CPAP, Dr. Marc became motivated to be part of a solution. That is when he introduced the dental solution, oral appliance therapy, into his practice. These custom designed dental devices that treat obstructive sleep apnea and have a higher adherence rate than CPAP. Newman Dental Sleep Medicine was born.

Awareness of sleep-disordered breathing has always been a global issue. A world-renowned sleep physician, Dr. William C. Dement, once said “sleep apnea… remains the most undiagnosed deadly problem in medicine.”

At Newman Dental Sleep Medicine we attempt to tackle this problem by following sleep-disordered breathing screening and sleep testing protocols consistent with the highest levels of patient care. Our board-certified sleep physician is able to interpret and diagnose home sleep studies administered through our office as well as make himself available for telemedicine (virtual) consults as needed.

This way of practice is currently consistent and accepted by all insurance policies as well as the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM).

Dr. Marc’s Qualifications and Sleep Apnea Treatment Philosophy

Dr Marc Newman Sleep ApneaAt Newman Dental Sleep Medicine we want patients to be treated by a highly credentialed dentist that has expertise in treating obstructive sleep apnea.

Dr. Marc has received and continues to receive education and training from nationally known, board certified dentists specializing in sleep-disordered breathing treatment and is currently working on AADSM diplomate certification. In addition, he recently became a member of the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorder Disciplines.

From 2014 to 2018 Dr. Marc was one of the top providers in the state of Indiana for the ResMed Narval dental device (it was discontinued in May 2018). He was recently quoted in the Spring 2020 issue of Dental Sleep Practice in the “Expert View” column. Dr. Marc continues to network and build relationships with the best physicians locally and nationally.

Trust and integrity are principles Dr. Marc adheres to both professionally and personally.

Building trust with patients to him means active listening and developing a sleep solution that is comfortable for the patient. Dr. Marc is familiar with a plethora of dental devices and will help navigate people in their decision. He also believes trust also comes with being cost-friendly. This is why he chose to be in network with the majority of medical PPO plans and Medicare.

Integrity is defined as being honest and holding strong moral principles. An oral appliance might not work alone. It might not work at all. It may take a combination of other therapies to find success. It may take additional testing to accurately predict response to oral appliance therapy.

Dr. Marc believes it is vitally important patients are well informed of their options and expectations prior to starting treatment.

“I have been so happy with every visit with Dr Marc Newman! He is super nicer and very informative.

Before coming to Dr Marc and getting my new dental appliance, I did not sleep well and woke up with a headache every morning! I had such low energy during the day from my lack of sleep.

From the very first night of wearing my appliance I have slept so much better. I have not had a single headache and I now have so much energy!!!

I have been so happy with my appliance that I have already recommended Dr Marc to a few people and will be having my husband visit soon!

Thank you again Dr Marc for all you have done for me!”
